Service Description

*Please note that a booking requires a minimum of two people. If you don't have a hiking partner, please contact us before making a booking.* Located in Kerry, Carrauntoohil is arguably the most famous peak in the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks, if not Ireland. Standing proudly at 1,039 meters (approx. 3,400 ft), it is the highest mountain in the whole country. What can I expect from a hike up Carrauntoohil with Roam Wild? Starting at Cronin’s Yard, the hike begins with a steady walk into the Hag’s Glen and begins to ascend via the Devil’s Ladder (the major access route to the mountain) up to the saddle. Turning right from there, we will then begin the final ascent to the beautiful summit of the mountain. Here you will give yourself a well-deserved pat on the back, before soaking up the views from the very top of Ireland. After a quick cuppa and a bite to eat, we will retrace our path back down to the saddle, then down the zig-zag path before rejoining the trail back to our starting point. Please note that this is the must popular route up and Carrauntoohil. Other variations are available depending on fitness levels and preferences. How long will it take? Depending on your fitness levels, how many breaks you want to take and how often you stop for photos, the whole hike can take from 6hrs - 8hrs total. What should I wear? This is Ireland after all, so we do recommend you come prepared with waterproof boots and waterproof clothing! Walking trousers or comfortable athletic clothes are ideal..please don't wear jeans! Depending on the time of year and weather forecast, a spare warm layer, a hat and gloves may be needed! Mountain footwear is essential as this hike covers a rough mountain path that is rocky and unstable in some places. You may be turned away by the guide if you arrive in inappropriate footwear! Do I need to bring my own food and drink? Yes! Please bring an adequate supply of drinking water for the hike and something light to eat during our short break at the top...can't go wrong with sandwiches and a flask of tea! Anything else? Yes, don't forget your camera and your sense of adventure! (Please note: This hike is graded as ‘Strenuous’ and requires a good level of fitness, it is not suitable for beginners. Strictly no dogs allowed.)
